As someone who has waitressed on and off for a long time, there is nothing worse than pointlessly stingy tippers.
Sure, if you’re a group of visiting Orthodox Jews and I mix your order up and bring y’all pork chops with buttered mashed potatoes with beer on the side (uh, hypothetically) then I can understand a 5% tip. I can even be grateful for your generosity. (Again, uh, hypothetically.)
But I think of it as a commission for a very hard job. So I like Paul Ryan even more now. Of course, the fact that he has had to live on a waiter’s wages and tips probably helps.
