UPDATED 'Never gonna give you up'

I love expressions of devotion — “Never gonna give you up” from 1987 by Rick Astley is so joyful and profound at the same time. I guess putting my attention on marriage equality makes me think, “What a perfect song to play at a wedding!” You know, when we can have them.

Update, 3/22/2010, Sun.: Well, this is embarrassing. I am only vaguely aware of the prank of rickrolling — claiming a link is relevant and awesome but instead goes to a video of Rick Astley singing, “Never gonna give you up” — and I totally forgot its connection to this song. Dang. Well, on the bright side, over at Ace of Spades HQ I see there’s a new rickroll video on the rise and I SWEAR my link takes you there. I wonder how long before there’s a “Trololo” man  and “Downfall” mash-up?  Or “Trololo” man starts appearing in news footage to help Robert Gibbs sell the latest “unexpected” statistics charting Obama’s destruction of the American economy?

I know everyone else is focused on the healthcare reform bill showdown this weekend and suddenly all my posts are “gay this” and “equality that.” Also, this is old news. Nevertheless, my attention is on equality rather than healthcare reform right now.

From The Daily Show, Jan. 14, 2010.

FYI: “I’m the lawyer” means, “I’m this man’s divorce attorney, not his spouse.”

Also, seriously, anti-gay-equality activists, you are totally ASKING FOR MOCKERY when you accuse us of “cramming the gay agenda down our throats.”

The gay agenda is equality for lesbians and gays.

Long-time gentle readers recall I participated in the National Equality March for homosexual equality in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 11, 2009, just a month after marching in the 9/12 Tea Party March on Washington. The speakers at both marches were filled with love of country and reverence for the Constitution and America’s founding principles. But the gay and lesbian speakers spoke of America from the point of view of their hurt and amazement that in America — America! — they are not equal. In America!

P.S.

What’s up with The Daily Show not having any token lesbian or gay reporters/commentators? I nominate me.

P.P.S.

Bonus from Oct. 13, 2009, partly because it includes Lt. Dan Choi speaking — see above, “hurt,” “amazement,” “America! In America!” — and partly because Jon Stewart contrasts the coverage of the Tea Party March with that of the Equality March — it seems there’s plenty of “You’re not covering my protest because you disagree with us!” to go around:

Howard Stern: 'I'll never vote for a Democrat again, they're Communists!'

I love Howard Stern because after Maharishi Mahesh Yogi died on Feb. 5, 2008, Stern spoke fondly about interviewing him. In addition, Stern credited the Transcendental Meditation program with saving his mother’s life from being lost to depression. He and his sidekick, Robin, also spoke positively about how practicing the TM program has benefited them.

Apparently today Howard Stern has awakened to what the Democratic Party has become. He told his listeners, “I’ll never vote for a Democrat again, they’re Communists.”

Yes, Howard. Yes, they are. And if you want to know more about where the Democrats want to take America, I recommend you read The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich Hayek, which was first published in 1944.

The Milgram experiment as a French game show

Allahpundit has a video clip of the fake French game show “Game of Death” that tested whether contestants would administer potentially fatal electric shocks to another contestant when ordered to do so as part of the game — 81 percent did. He matches that with some information about the famous experiment from 1961 by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram, who was trying to figure out why the Germans followed orders to commit the mass murders of the Holocaust.

However, I think Allah and others overstate the amount of pressure or domination that was applied in the Milgram experiment to induce the 62.5 percent of the participants to deliver painful and potentially lethal electric shocks. Here’s what the authority figure said to gain compliance:

If at any time the subject indicated his desire to halt the experiment, he was given a succession of verbal prods by the experimenter, in this order:

  1. Please continue.
  2. The experiment requires that you continue.
  3. It is absolutely essential that you continue.
  4. You have no other choice, you must go on.

If the subject still wished to stop after all four successive verbal prods, the experiment was halted. Otherwise, it was halted after the subject had given the maximum 450-volt shock three times in succession.

The above commands do not represent enormous duress. It is sobering enough to imagine that these acts were committed under terrible pressure, but they weren’t. The authority figure just insisted. There were no threats. There were no consequences for quitting.

Obama takes full advantage of whatever it is in the 60 to 80 percent of the population vulnerable to the commands of authority figures to commit atrocities. Whenever Obama cannot gain the support, money and power he wants from other people voluntarily by making them whatever promise they want to hear (with no intention of delivering), he always turns domineering and contemptuous. I hope one day soon people figure out that the best response then is just to laugh in his face and call him on his lie of the moment — and rinse and repeat as necessary.

Linda Lou's home

Peter Davis of Shakey Pete’s Shootin’ Shack is one of my very best blog friends and a frequent commenter here. On Feb. 24, his wife, Linda Lou, fell and broke her leg so badly that she hospitalized until March 12. Linda Lou’s home now and it sounds like they are getting the help and equipment they need. Peter says he hurt his back getting Linda Lou up the wheelchair ramp he built because it was too steep. Thank goodness he has volunteers to help him re-build it. The ratio for wheelchair ramps is that for every inch the ramp has to go up, it should be a foot long — see the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).
