When I was a reporter for the Harford Democrat (1980-1982), social conservatives were on a rampage about the quality of education in local schools. The vice president of their group was an English teacher. I received a press release from them about how important it was to censor the books in the local schools that concluded with the urgent call to action, “Our children’s future is at steak [sic]!” One of the books they wanted to yank was called, Making It with Mademoiselle. This turned out to be a sewing book from a teen girls’ fashion magazine named Mademoiselle. So, sometimes social conservatives, with the best intentions, can be too dirty-minded — and sometimes, not dirty-minded enough:
