Peter Davis of Shakey Pete’s Shootin’ Shack is one of my very best blog friends and a frequent commenter here. On Feb. 24, his wife, Linda Lou, fell and broke her leg so badly that she hospitalized until March 12. Linda Lou’s home now and it sounds like they are getting the help and equipment they need. Peter says he hurt his back getting Linda Lou up the wheelchair ramp he built because it was too steep. Thank goodness he has volunteers to help him re-build it. The ratio for wheelchair ramps is that for every inch the ramp has to go up, it should be a foot long — see the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG).

You would not believe how helpful my neighbors are, though. We had a medical outing today and the young man living in a postage stamp travel trailer ‘cross the road in his parents’ backyard was right there, pushing and pulling her wheelchair up this monster my Pard Steve and I built.
I love living in the country. Even the folks that don’t much like me are right there when I need them, and vice versa. Today was a visit with a back specialist, the diagnosis is (surprise, surprise) serious arthritis. The grandchildren are the biggest reason I’m not sorry to have missed dying young and leavin’ a good lookin’ corpse. Well, that and the special at Popeye’s Fried Chicken!
More than anything I want to thank you and your readers for the good wishes and prayers. Just knowing of them made this whole thing easier to take.

Peter,
I’m so glad you’ve got people helping you out!
About pushing/pulling the wheelchair — if you have to go over any obstacle higher than half an inch, it can turn the front casters sideways and stop the wheelchair, which can give Linda Lou a whiplash. So, watch out for rough ground and sidewalk cracks. And sometimes you just have to walk backwards and pull the wheelchair so the big wheels go first since they can handle uneven ground.
How have the dogs reacted to having Linda Lou back? Also, don’t think I’m going to stop urging you to tell your stories of meeting Janice Joplin. And let me know when you do so I can link you and clang some bells for you in the blogosphere.
