Maryland Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski is running for re-election this year. She will turn 74 in July and because she has atrial fibrillation I think she also has obstructive sleep apnea — but whatever, she has had a long career of public service, and since there’s a possibility she may have begun to consider a graceful retirement today, I covet her seat in the Senate for a fiscally conservative Republican who wants to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Well, I can dream, can’t I?
Sen. Mikulski would still have noble work to do in retirement if she came out of the closet as a lesbian and then applied her charm, determination and lifetime of political skills to campaigning for legal equality for lesbians and gays. So it would be a win-win, really.
I think of these things because I am a giver.
So, Moe, what say we get cracking on a Maryland miracle? It’s not like Obama to stop self-destructing and taking everyone he can with him. The more he is frustrated, humiliated and shamed — and Brown’s victory is an epic public pantsing — the more he reveals the real, ruthless Obama who must have what he wants regardless of how he gets it. I have a feeling this is starting to put some people off. You know, the ones who aren’t already under the bus.
AMEN. I’m all in for a Maryland Miracle. Mikulski has proven herself pathetic and destructive in public office. Cynthia – I like where you’re generous head’s at – if there’s a role this woman can find that will stop her from doing harm, and allow her to finally do some good – like advocating for gay rights – then we’d all be better served with her in it.

By the way, I was a reporter for the Harford Democrat in 1981 when Mikulski returned from an overseas feminist conference with an Australian feminist, Teresa Mary Brennan, whom she hired as part of her Congressional staff. Brennan immediately began to behave like a dictator and several members of Mikulski’s staff resigned. I remember at least one Democratic member of my local county council asking me if I thought the scandal indicated that Mikulski was a lesbian. I certainly did. There were mild editorials in the Baltimore Sun that I read as reassuring Mikulski that no one cared about her being a lesbian, but she ought to get herself free of such a destructive partner. In 1986, carpetbagger Linda Chavez tried to use Mikulski’s sexual orientation against her when Chavez was running against her as the Republican candidate for the Senate. Chavez was nearly vaporized, so no one has tried it again. However, when Mikulski supported the Defense of Marriage Act, re-outing her had an improving effect.
The Left delays doing anything for homosexual equality, except when it actively opposes it and supports regimes and political movements that kill gays and lesbians. However, as a Leftie, Mikulski is in a good position to advocate for homosexuals by working with the Leftie leaders of the black community who are opposed to equality for homosexuals because they are nation-building and don’t want any black person excused from baby-making. I also would love for her to write her autobiography if she is honest about being a lesbian and what it was like to be in the closet as a U.S. Senator. Mikulski is in a position to do an enormous amount of good, if she retires and works for homosexual equality.

Cynthia, who is your Republican Precinct Chair? Or does your precinct even have one?
I submit that it is very easy to get involved in politics at the local level, indeed many precincts, especially in Democrat territory, have no chairmen or chairwomen. Those who do usually do not have enough people to be delegates to the (state) Senatorial District Conventions.
This is your chance, Cyn, to have a lot more power than you do in choosing the fate of the political future of Maryland and the nation. I mean that if I can be unanimously elected to Precinct Chairaman in Texas with one whole vote (long and funny story) and then reelected twice, well, you’re smarter than I am and a helluva lot prettier.

I suppose I understand why she felt the need to conceal her orientation in the 80s, but I really hope she feels safe opening up about it now. I believe in my heart she’d find a truly receptive and supportive audience. Even if some of us in that audience would like to see her voted out b/c we find her a lousy Senator!

For the first time since Utopia took the helm and started steering this ship into the iceberg, I feel hopeful! And real hope, not Utopia hope. Go, Scott, Go!), and then was distracted by a busy week.
