'Obama is Hitler' — how dueling Hitlers led me to fiscal conservatism

I took a photo of a poster of Obama with a Hitler mustache at Sen. Ben Cardin’s ObamaCare town hall meeting in Towson, Maryland, without realizing how significant it was that the African man with the Muslim name who was holding it was standing so close to the LaRouche booth. I gather now that the Right’s ACTUAL tolerance of free speech is confusing to the Left because they appear to believe that we would run off everyone we disagree with, and take away their signs, as they do — so therefore we all must agree with EVERY sign in a predominantly Right-wing protest.

Um, no, we don’t.

But, whatever, now I’m seeing several headlines in my newsfeed about Obama as Hitler because however viciously the Left attacked Pres. Bush — including actual attacks on vehicles that should have resulted in serious jail time, but did not because they were treated by a supposed totalitarian as free speech — and however often they pictured him as Hitler and with swastikas — now they are screaming bloody treason over posters using far tamer versions of the Hitler theme on Obama.

Funnily enough, it was an “Obama is Hitler!,” no, “McCain is Hitler!” stand-off with a now-former friend in September that ignited my passion for fiscal conservatism. She is Jewish and has a Ph.D. in neuropsychology, so I figured by culture and education she would be up for reasoned debate, and as a scientist she would be willing to trade in facts.

Wrong. So wrong.

Well, anyway, after the first volley of dueling Hitlers — “Your guy is Hitler!,” “No! YOUR guy is Hitler!” — which is, after all, a traditional form of beginning a debate among liberals — I realized I needed to be able to substantiate my intuitions opposing Obama and supporting Gov. Palin (who I thought should have been at the top of the ticket and who I think would be a better president RIGHT NOW than Obama ever could be). So  I began trolling news sites and blogs to educate myself so I could explain coherently to her and all my Democrat friends why I would not vote for Obama and no longer supported liberalism. I was spending three or more hours a day on this because I wanted to present my friend with lots of annotated links proving that an Obama presidency would be a disaster for Jews and Israel and that what Obama promises and what he delivers are seldom the same AND THAT THAT IS A BAD THING.

So, from time to time, I sent my friend facts and reason and got passion and the deliberate lies by feminists about Gov. Palin as responses.

I don’t require that my friends agree with me, so we went on this way from early September to the week after the Inauguration, when she sent me a very rude and unfunny e-mail gloating about Obama’s victory in response to my e-mail congratulating her. That shifted matters from debate to emotional abuse. I do not put up with that. But what really ended the friendship was a follow-up e-mail in which she claimed Biden’s superiority over Gov. Palin. It’s one thing to disagree. But I do not argue with crazy people. So that was that.

But, for the record, darned if it isn’t becoming clearer every day: Obama IS Hitler. I do think he’s positioning us for his own Enabling Act and the kindling for his fire in the Reichstag is comprised of the legislation he is getting passed to saddle the U.S. with levels of debt and government intrusion intended to be fatal to capitalism, democracy and liberty.

P.S.

Michelle Malkin has the story on the Left equating Pres. Bush with Hitler and the attack on the president’s motorcade referred to above.

Here is a round-up on the “Obama as Hitler” poster:

  1. Hey Cynthia,

We met briefly at the Cardin protest. Towards the end. I think you were giving my son your website info and he didn’t have anything to write it down with and I told him I had it. So I looked you up when we got back, and I have to hand it to you, excuse the pun, but you really do have your head on “straight”. What a pleasure to have you in the Conservative Party. I’d really like to have a dialog with you, if we could. I think I have an idea that you might be interested in with my son at Goucher. You have my email, and maybe you will email me – I hope. Thanks for your insights. Peggy

  2. Jeez, Cynthia, I never thought you were naive. When have Democrats ever used reason in argumentation? During the 90s I watched a lot of CSPAN trying to decide with which party I would affiliate myself. That was the Gingrich era. The GOP won hands down. Democrats made base appeal to emtion and lied faster than Secretariat trotted; it was shameful. Facts? WHo cared about facts when a lie would sway the elderly against the GOP? Black Dems, white Dems, same pack of lies, same appeal to emotion. The shame of it! I’ve learnt not to waste time arguing anything with Dem voters. They don’t like reason, and they go ad hominem when they cannot offer a logical response.

    1. Apodoca,

I’m just starting to realize how much I bought the cover story of the Democrats that they were for the little guy and didn’t do the hard work of looking to see whether what they were selling was what they delivered — in other words, checking to see if their actions matched their words. You have to be paying serious attention to see the disconnect.

Now I am trying to figure out how to get people who think they are liberal Democrats to realize that they really are fiscally conservative Republicans if they see what political philosophy will deliver on their ideals and goals. In other words, how to bring people to the same, “Aha!” moment I had last fall once I really started paying attention. Oh, and by the way, I thought I had been paying attention before because I read newspapers and news magazines. So it’s not like I was disengaged.

    1. Apodoca,

I read the Baltimore Sun and The Washington Post, Newsweek and Time magazines, and watched the major evening news broadcasts — as a child and teen we watched Walter Cronkite and Eric Sevareid on CBS most nights. I like to say I didn’t understand conservativism because George Will was the one explaining it to me.

      Cynthia
