Bring 'FIRE DAVID LETTERMAN' petitions and letters to your local Tea Parties

I just made the following comment over at HillBuzz’s post on the importance of persistence in dealing with corporations — in this case, the campaign to persuade CBS to fire David Letterman:

What if we went to the Tea Parties with petitions calling for David Letterman to be fired and brought along pre-printed post cards and letters people could sign (after filling in their return address) that we would mail to CBS and Letterman’s sponsors?

We should press this until Letterman is fired.

I am positive the reason HillBuzz is standing pat on Sebastian’s June 18 post is that they are pressing this point: persistence and tenacity win the day. The idea of going to the Tea Parties prepared to give people something tangible to do to show that attacking children to intimidate and manipulate people you don’t agree with is career suicide will show CBS the campaign to FIRE DAVID LETTERMAN is gathering momentum.

  1. I don’t believe there is any “they” in Hillbuzz. Hillbuzz is almost certainly a single person, hence the fact that all the posts are written in the same authorial voice and style, complete with the same idiosyncratic coinages. Not to mention under the same username. There is no vast anonymous collective of gay male Chicago Democrat PUMAS. My guess is that Hillbuzz has been quiet recently because whoever runs it found some work, or possibly is receiving treatment for whatever illness had kept him at home and given him the time to write all those long, nearly-identical posts.

    1. Joe,

I think Sebastian has the most distinctive voice at HillBuzz and does most of the writing, but not all of it. And I do think he works with a group of friends. No one ever said it was vast.

I think the reason there hasn’t been a new post since June 18 is that Sebastian wants to keep everyone’s attention on how important persistence is in getting David Letterman fired — which is what the June 18 post covers. The last time I looked the post had almost 500 comments, so that’s where all the new material is.

Also, HillBuzz is preparing a new site. So I expect a lot of work is going into that, instead of writing new posts.

    1. Rosita,

Thank you for all your praise and comments! I hope I’m in your blogroll, too! Also, be sure to fill out your blog URL fully here so Comment Luv can go retrieve the link and title of your last post and put it below your comment.

Just write your own copy for the petition and letter. Make it short, along these lines:

On June 8 and 9 David Letterman deliberately attacked the teen-age daughters of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with the intention of destroying her through her children. His remarks were not funny. They were cruel, demeaning and sexist and they hurt all women. By attacking Gov. Palin’s children, Mr. Letterman served notice that he will use his platform to hurt the children of people he disagrees with in order to destroy them and shut them up. With his sneering and insincere sham apologies, Mr. Letterman used the excuse of comedy as a shield. This must not stand. Mr. Letterman must be fired for attacking children and for his sexism. We call on all of Mr. Letterman’s sponsors to stop advertising on his show and we serve notice we will stop buying their products until they do. We call on CBS to fire David Letterman now.

Then on the petition, have places for people to print their name, sign their name, and give their address and contact info. Tell them their info will not be used for any other purpose.

  2. Hi Cynthia, I did not have enough time to put together a petition before tonight’s July 1st tea party protest, I was crazy to think I could have, but I’m going to look around for events going on on July 4th. I put your blog on my blogroll as soon as I found it through looking for anti-Letterman stuff.

The tea party tonight: not that great. Republicans are no good at, what Sebastian Grey talked about, mobilizing and creating a festival atmosphere at a protest. I’ve gone to a few pro-choice rallies in the past, so I’m familiar with the Lefty protest scene (the good thing about Republican protesters much much much less obnoxious and self-conscious).

What I’d really like to do is to do some Saul Alinsky-Acornesque stuff. Guy I know suggested going to Letterman show wearing Palin t-shirts, but the only people up for it were him and me.

So, I’ll check out July 4th protests and see if I can find one around.

Why don’t you start a new feminist organization? NOW is not cutting it. There’s Team Sarah. But we need something cooler. I think we need like a Black Panthers type thing for Palin.

    1. Rosita,

I like the way you think! I don’t feel called to start a new feminist organization but I will be doing my best to educate conservatives on how to do a protest properly.

  3. Hi Cynthia! I like the way you think too! Like that weasel Rahm Emannuel said, A crisis is an opportunity, and I do want to remake the Republican party- not to make it more diverse ethnically because we have what it takes to attract every ethnicity except the majority of African-Americans, who are like what 13% of the population at this point (until Obama performs the census) and who obviously are never going to vote anything but Democrat ever again- and that’s OKAY. We need to get over that.

BUT. I want to make the Republican party more socially tolerant. Republicans actually are very tolerant people. People in general just care about money. I want it to be like, you don’t have to be white, you don’t have to be a straight person who has been faithful to your high school sweetheart since you became sexually active- on your wedding night, you don’t have to go to church every Sunday. You just have to want a stable society based around individual liberty and small government- government out of your life. In fact, anybody who wants the government butting into their personal life should be Republican.

It’s like I want to re-make my father’s party to make it more comfortable for ME.

Based on my education and most of my peer groups, in some ways I culturally fit in more with liberals- on most social issues, except that I love my family and believe in God. That’s why I’m so happy to make your acquaintance and that you’re newly conservative- I want more people like you in the Republican party! It can be lonely!

Ok, going with your fantastic idea, I am looking around for tea parties in the NYC area on July 4th to attend with a petition.

    1. Rosita,

That’s kind of you to write to Prof. Reynolds and also to credit me and Sebastian Gray. It was Sebastian who really explained the problem to me through his posts at HillBuzz. I realized that conservatives might be wary of him as a Democrat and that I would have more credibility as a Republican and fiscal conservative so I had to take up the hue and cry in the Right Blogosphere. Sebastian has earned and deserves credibility, but others just haven’t followed his posts and HillBuzz as long as I have to know that.

  4. Kindness doesn’t enter into it, Cynthia! 🙂 I’m on a mission.

I do not have the time to fotz around with Excel, so I’m just going to draft signatory sheets on graph paper or something.

I first looked at Hillbuzz during the campaign and thought they were on to Obama and very funny.

Nobody should be wary of Democrats- this is no longer a Democrat/Republican fight, this is a “preserving the republic” v. “third world style totalitarian government fight.” I have met quite a few ex-Democrats who are very very concerned.
