Frequent commenter Amy suggested I check out a YouTube video of misheard lyrics, which led me to this one of “What’s love got to do with it?” by Tina Turner. It made me laugh and I can’t resist sharing it.

Years ago when Cheap Trick came out with Dream Police (recently re-incarnated in the Super Bowl Audi commercial as Green Police), I really thought they were saying “green police.” At any rate, I was made aware of my error when my brother stopped me during my caterwauling of the song to ask me what the heck I was singing.
I was just ahead of my time!
Stinky,
The tradition of misheard lyrics probably started with the first song. I remember reading a Hildegarde Dolson short story as a teen — she is a humorist and make sure to read, “How Beautiful with Mud,” — and her brother thought the lyrics to “Onward Christian Soldiers” were “Christ the royal Master leans against the phone,” instead of “Christ the royal Master leads against the foe.” Now you will never be able to hear or sing that song again without breaking out in gales of laughter. Like me.

Hey, thank you for embedding my misheard lyrics video!
alexyu,
Thank you for making your misheard lyrics video embeddable! Please use the word “embeddable” as much as you can so I can convince the nice Merriam-Webster dictionary people it really is a word.

Remember, “Elvira,” back in 1981, by The Oak Ridge Boys?
My college roommate informed me that they were singing, “Elvira,” not “they’ll fire us.”
Jesus leaning against the phone?! lol!
Stinky, LOL! Years ago, I asked my mom what a “hell fire up” was, which was when I learned the real lyrics to the song Elvira.
That is so funny! I love how the filters on our ears produce different results!
