I’m skeptical myself that DADT is necessary or effective. The old saw about never giving an order you know won’t be obeyed comes to mind. I don’t think ‘Just Jack!’ and Harvey Firestein are going to run off to join the Airborne if we do away with it, but gays who want to enlist are going to enlist anyway. There are and always have been regulations against homosexual practices detrimental to good order and discipline. balanced now by equivalent regulations governing hetero relationships now that we have more mixed-gender units.

But DADT was a bad idea itself, a political toy put forward to placate a voting bloc. I mean, tell the services not to check for something there’s no test for anyway? But I’d be surprised not to find out a lot of the currently serving gays don’t want open gays in the service. Gavin Newsom’s “Whether you like it or not” could make things real crowded real fast in a bunker or berthing compartment…

Also, I acknowledge your correction about Hasan not putting down his religion on the form you reference. But there doesn’t seem to have been a whole lot of secrecy about it, considering all the agencies who were looking at him without taking action…

There are plenty of gay and lesbian kids in the world they are in, believe me. In fact, gay and lesbian kids are probably over-represented in their world due to the number of parents who throw away their gay teenagers because their religion/narcissism commands them to do so (in their sick interpretation of it, anyway).

Our military volunteers are required to cope with an enormous amount of diversity already. Homosexuals are not going to be the feather boa that breaks the camel’s back.

Seriously — Colin Powell would not support the abolition of DADT if it would weaken the military.

I have to add that my father ALWAYS laughs when DADT comes up and says the same thing each time, “Alexander conquered the world with an army full of gays.” Which brings up that homosexuals serve openly in the Israeli and British armies.

How many soldiers will die because Arabic interpreter Lt. Dan Choi was thrown out for being gay and was not available for crucial interrogations?

I linked Hasan’s form in an earlier post — he did not list his religion.

MY point is that if the military already embraces diversity to the point where it allows non-citizens to get the path to citizenship to serve, and it allows Muslims who are commanded to deceive — look up taqiyya — and kill unbelievers, and it is already a mix of races and religions, then there is just absolutely no reason not to allow homosexuals to serve while acknowledging their sexual orientation and observing the same rules of decorum about it as everyone else.

Christianity and Judaism have changed to accommodate human rights. Remember the Western Enlightenment? There is no Middle Eastern equivalent.

An Army Division is pretty big and has people from all the Combat Arms and the Service Branches organic to it. The Navy and the Air Force have comparable sized units.

I shall repeat myself here.There is nobody in the country that knows the kids signing up for todays military well enough to know how they’d react. They’re the kids that don’t stay in college, either they don’t have the money or they get there and don’t fit in. Those kids don’t come from your world, Cyn. They are as smart as anybody else but they aren’t sophisticated. At least not yet. They will be, though.

We can’t even poll them, the disease of political correctness means that people lie. Plus, of course, pollsters are only about half as honest as used car salesmen.
