Letterman has a five-year-old son with a long-time partner he married in March. He is 62 and has had a quintuple heart bypass. If it occurs to him that he needs to spend time with his family and focus on his health, and retires IMMEDIATELY, say, by Friday, June 19, 2009 — I’m a great believer in being specific about objectives — well, everybody’s a winner.

You’re awesome Cynthia. Going wobbly on firing Letterman illustrates the problem with conservatism as a movement. We understand all about incentives and disincentives in tax policy and dealing with dictators, but are blind to the fact that they also apply in how we advance our political aims. Letterman must go so that conservatives are not disuaded from running for public office. If concern for subjecting their families to Letterman’s type of public abuse tips the scales for 10, 20 or 30% of our people against runnning for office, our pool of talent is much diminished and our cause suffers. If Letterman survives, all we’ve done is tone down his abuse a bit and only for a time. But if we follow through and destroy his remaining career over it, everyone else in media and particularly the MSM heads will know there are consequences to slandering GOP families. Being at the end of his career with money to spare, there’s little downside concsience-wise in his being the scalp we take.
