Dave,

I haven't heard Hilton's tirade, but thank you for drawing it to my attention. I always appreciate your visits and comments.

Eric Hoffer, author of The True Believer, observed that the French Revolution occurred when the peasants had never had it better. There was a bursting point to their patience, once they had a glimpse of how much better their lives could be with more rights. Perhaps that is what is happening in California. The cruelty of snatching away the right to marriage is beyond description and genuinely and purposefully murderous. To believe that people would not speak bitterly or respond in kind is to demand more of others than we might wish others to demand of us if we were tossed out of a comparable promised land.

However, I do wish groups like the Human Rights Campaign and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force would get busy with campaigns to get more lesbians and gays to lead open lives, so that their families, friends and colleagues will know that if they believe lesbians and gays are second-class citizens, they are damaging and limiting the lives of people they claim to care about, even their own children, not nameless and distant demonized strangers. There's really no comparison between what lesbians and gays are being forced to endure and a scolding by Perez Hilton. And anyone who decides to withhold equal rights for lesbians and gays in retaliation for the Prop. 8/Miss California backlash, by the very facts OF their reprisal AND that it is so staggeringly out of proportion to the offenses, is not in a position to criticize anyone in the backlash.
